Class and such

January 4, 2006

Today was the first day of Winter Quarter.

Computer Science, at 9AM, is too early for me to have an opinion of.
History (europe 1713-present) should be a fun lecture, but the text book is absolutely horrible. I had to read 100 pages in it tonight (due tomorrow), which wasn’t fun.
Math is taught by someone too young to be teaching a college course by herself — had I not already known what she was attempting to teach today, I would have been totally lost.

The above three classes I have all within 10 minutes of eachother. I can make it to all of them on time, but it’s difficult, and I have to leave as soon as the time is up, regardless of whether the Professor is done lecturing or not.

My Geology Professor I think I’ll like, which is a Good Thing, as I think it will be the most difficult class.

I’ll stick it out for at least a week, but, as it stands now, I’ll probably drop history. Getting to that class on time from CS and from it to math, coupled with 100 pages a night in a horrible text book, just isn’t worth it. I only signed up for the class for the extra credits, so it won’t be a terrible loss (though I’d rather drop math or perhaps even geology) and it will ease up my schedule considerably.
Today I’ve barely had time to do anything other than homework (in fact I don’t have time — I shouldn’t be sitting here typing this now) and it’s only the first day. I’ve always considered roughly half of my learning to come from actual school — the rest comes from outside experience (mostly reading) which has nothing to do with class. As it stands now, all of my free time will be spent either in class or working/reading for class which, to me, is unacceptable.
If I do drop history, I’ll certainly still (re)read all the primary documents that the class requires (All Quiet on the Western Front, Candide, Communist Manifesto, Night, The French Revolution and Human Rights, and Pocket Guide to Writing in History).

I’ll see how the work load pans out in the next week or so.

In other news…
Dreamhost quadrupled the disk space (bringing the total to ~65gb) and octupled the bandwidth (~1.8tb).
MercyCorps, which has been my preferred donation agency since the tsunami last year, is in the news.
I had to drive all the way down to SeaTac (from Bellingham) last night pick up a friend at the airport.
